High card wins, and a tie means war

War is the simplest game in the suite and pure luck. Turn your top card, the higher card takes both, and when two cards tie it is war, with a growing pile riding on the next card up.

How it plays

War in three steps.

  1. The full deck is split evenly, twenty-six cards each, face down and never looked at, and it is dealt once for the whole match.

  2. You both turn your top card at the same time, and the higher card takes both, with aces high and suits not mattering at all.

  3. On a tie, each of you lays three cards down and one up, and the match ends when one player holds all fifty-two cards.
